Hello, everyone!
I just read that Ford has officially begun mass production of the all-electric Ford Explorer at their first dedicated EV facility in Europe! It's pretty cool because they spent $2 billion to convert an old plant into a cutting-edge factory for electric vehicles.
The new electric Explorer is based on Volkswagen's MEB platform (which is also used for the ID.4), as part of a partnership Ford began in 2020. It's built for families, with 470 liters of storage and a massive 15-inch touchscreen that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
One thing that stood out to me was the Explorer EV's ability to fast charge from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes! That seems very useful for road trips.
Ford had planned to begin production in 2023, but it was postponed to meet new global safety regulations. It is currently being produced at Ford's new Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Germany. A second electric vehicle, a sporty crossover, will also be released soon.
The electric Explorer combines German engineering and American style, and Ford claims it has a range of more than 600 kilometres (374 miles) on a single charge. Apparently, they used the extra time to fine-tune everything, and as a result, the vehicle is expected to be even better.
It's amazing to think that Ford's Cologne factory, which opened in 1930, is now manufacturing cutting-edge electric vehicles. This seems like a big step for Ford in Europe!
